FMF – Rest

Five Minute Friday

Ready, set, go….Rest.  As I sit in tired pajamas on the edges of a crumb-stained couch, I see the disheveled state of  a house not long empty of sparring voices and sharpening words.  A conversation between generations that led us to examine, with sincerity, a part of Scripture I’d not spent much time thinking of before.

Each voice a reflection of a life lived, echoes of parents I know, memories I don’t know.  Independent thoughts fomenting in the safety of a warm living room, over cups of coffee, tucked up on dining room chairs pulled in tightly so that none is excluded.  Lives unfolding before each other in a cacophony of beautiful dissent, consent, discovery, devotion.  Cautious voices contrasting against those older, more confident perspectives and the giggle of a child during the quiet times.

This busy, this bustle of life, this sharing of full hearts to pour into the open places put in front of me with trust is when I find myself hungry for more than just the warm apple tart on the counter.  I am hungry for my God to fill me, to open my heart and put His light within so that the shine of His goodness becomes more than just a point of discussion but the reality of loving those who are not always lovely but forever glorious.

In the quiet of the night I know I have spent all I have in the offering of this small thing to a great God and to honor the gift of belonging He has given me.  In the aftermath of all that giving, I can quietly say….

I have found rest.
